Bosch Dishwasher E15 Error: What It Means and How to Fix It
The Bosch E15 error code means water has collected in the base pan and the flood protection system has activated. Here is how to fix it — and when you need a technician.

Bosch Dishwasher E15 Error: What It Means and How to Fix It
The Bosch E15 error code is one of the most alarming dishwasher error codes — it indicates that water has collected in the base pan of the dishwasher and the AquaStop flood protection system has activated. The dishwasher locks itself out to prevent water damage to your floor.
Here is everything you need to know about the E15 error, including a DIY fix that works in many cases.
What Causes the Bosch E15 Error?
The E15 error is triggered by a float switch in the base pan of the dishwasher. When water accumulates in the base pan, the float rises and activates the switch, which:
- Stops the wash cycle
- Activates the drain pump continuously to remove the water
- Displays the E15 error code
- Locks out the dishwasher until the issue is resolved
Common causes of water in the base pan:
- Leaking door seal or door gasket
- Leaking pump seal
- Leaking hose connection inside the dishwasher
- Overfilling due to a faulty water inlet valve
- Detergent foam overflow (using too much detergent or the wrong type)
The DIY Tilt Fix (Works in Many Cases)
If the E15 error appeared after a minor leak or after using too much detergent, there may only be a small amount of water in the base pan. The tilt fix drains this water without requiring disassembly:
- Turn off the dishwasher and disconnect it from power.
- Remove the dishwasher from the cabinet (unscrew the mounting brackets).
- Carefully tilt the dishwasher forward at approximately 45 degrees and hold for 1–2 minutes. This allows the water in the base pan to drain through the front.
- Set the dishwasher upright and allow it to dry for 30–60 minutes.
- Reconnect power and run a short cycle to test.
Important: If the E15 error returns within a few cycles, there is an active leak that needs to be found and repaired. The tilt fix only removes accumulated water — it does not fix the underlying leak.
When the Tilt Fix Does Not Work
If the E15 error returns after the tilt fix, a technician needs to identify and repair the source of the leak.
Door Seal / Gasket Leak
The door gasket runs around the perimeter of the door opening. A cracked or worn gasket allows water to escape during the wash cycle.
How to check: Run a short cycle and watch for water dripping from the door seal area.
Repair cost: $125–$225.
Pump Seal Leak
The circulation pump seal can wear out over time, allowing water to leak into the base pan during operation.
Repair cost: $175–$325.
Water Inlet Valve Leak
A faulty inlet valve may not close fully, allowing water to slowly drip into the tub and eventually overflow into the base pan.
Repair cost: $150–$275.
Hose Connection Leak
Internal hose connections can loosen over time. A technician will inspect all internal hose connections and tighten or replace as needed.
Repair cost: $100–$200.
Preventing the E15 Error
- Use the correct detergent — Always use dishwasher-specific detergent. Never use dish soap or hand soap, which creates excessive foam.
- Use the correct amount — Bosch recommends filling the detergent dispenser only to the marked line. Overfilling causes foam overflow.
- Inspect the door seal annually — Check for cracks, tears, or areas where the gasket has pulled away from the door frame.
- Keep the filter clean — A clogged filter can cause water to back up and overflow in unexpected ways.
